Daniel Staples BATES
Daniel Staples BATES was born on 30 June 1804 in Bennington County, VT. He is believed to be the son of Thomas Bates and Zilpha Staples.
Not much is known about Thomas. Based on what little I have been able to find out, I would say that Thomas was born between 1775 and 1784. The 1800 US Federal Census for Shaftsbury Township in Bennington County, Vermont, shows him as head of household under the heading “between the ages of 16 thru 25 yrs old”, and according to the 1880 OH, Lucas Co, Springfield, census, Daniel’s father was born in Vermont.
Zilpha was the daughter of Jacob Staples and Thankful Goodwin. She was born 10 April 1778 in Brooklyn, Windham, CT. She shows up on the 1810 census as head of household. In a news article in which Daniel was interviewed, he stated that when his father died his mother was left with small children. Some were bound out to learn trades.
